The Rev. Dr. Harold J. Uhl

Harold J. Uhl, with confidence in the grace and goodness of God, passed to life eternal on Aug. 6, 2019 at Munson Hospice House. Harold was born in New York City on Nov. 12, 1931 to Otto and Lucie Uhl and grew up in the Bronx with his brother, Wilfred.
He graduated from Capital University and Trinity Lutheran Seminary in Columbus, Ohio, and earned his doctorate in religious education at the University of Pittsburgh.
He was called to lead congregations in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania; Annandale, Virginia; North Miami, Florida; and Roanoke, Virginia. He also served many congregations as a consultant, helping them raise funds for building expansions. After retirement he continued to minister, teaching and preaching in churches in his community.
In addition to more than 60 years as a Lutheran pastor, he authored two books of children's sermons and many teaching materials. He always felt it was an honor to hear people's stories of faith, and it was his thrill to preach the good news of Jesus Christ's love for all.
Harold was a voracious reader and especially loved history books - he was disappointed any time he had to miss a book club meeting. An avid gardener, Harold grew all varieties of flowers, shrubs, vegetables and herbs. His Virginia home looked more like a botanical garden than a lawn. He was a bonsai aficionado and could spend an afternoon contemplating which leaf to prune.
Harold leaves behind his loving wife, Bethany Arnold Uhl, with whom he enjoyed 18 years of devotion, spiritual growth, travel near and far and just plain fun every day. They could be found at 5:30 each afternoon enjoying a martini and talking about current events while they watched the BBC news. Cruising was their favorite sport, with more than 20 voyages. Travels took them to Australia and New Zealand - Harold loved lamb - ports in South America - walking with penguins and raking coffee beans; and a good part of Europe, picking grapes in France and drinking a cold beer in every port; visiting majestic waterfalls in Iceland, Brazil, the Upper Peninsula and New York.
They visited every museum in Washington, D.C. and every botanical garden they could find. One of their most remembered sights was seeing the huge full moon over the water in St. Petersburg, Russia, while on their honeymoon cruise. All subsequent moons we compared to that one.
He and his late wife, Barbara Lee Edwards Uhl, married for 44 years, made a good team as they raised four wonderful children. He took great pride in teaching them integrity, honesty, hard work and a love of God.
He is survived by his children, Wayne (Debra) Uhl, Brian Uhl, Evelyn Uhl and Alison (Chuck) Marrs; stepchildren, Mark (Erica) Record and Allison (Andrew) Hayes; grandchildren, Nathan (Cassandra) Uhl, Leslie Uhl, Gregory (Erin) Conway, Shannon Conway, Justin Hayes, Owen Hayes, Luke Hayes, Jack Record and Kate Record; and great-grandbabies, Lillian and Ellis Uhl.
Visitation will take place at Advent Lutheran Church on Tuesday, Aug. 13, 2019 at 5 p.m. A funeral service led by Pastor Tim Jahn will follow at 7 p.m., after which, all are invited to a reception. Interment will take place in Columbus, Ohio, at a later date. Advent Lutheran Church is located at 8481 Lake Ann Road in Lake Ann.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions to Advent Lutheran Church in Lake Ann.

Thank you for the knowledge and guidance you shared. I'll never forget when you played the garden of gesthemene portion of Jesus Christ Superstar to show us the very real struggle of that night. As teenagers it was a moving and enlightening moment. You touched us and taught us more than you probably knew. Love to the family you leave behind.

I met Pastor Uhl in the late 60’s when I enrolled my oldest child Kathi Shull in his confirmation class at Hope Lutheran Church in Annandale, VA. MY other two kids also attended his classes: Bonni and Mark. He confirmed them all. He performed my second marriage to my husband of 44 years, Langston (Lang) Spell. His first wife Barbara was Bonni’s piano teacher. I taught Sunday School and VBS at Hope, and chaperoned the Coffee House and retreats for the Luther League. I have many fond memories of my days at Hope. My husband and I live in St Petersburg, FL. Besides my 3 kids, I have 11 grandchildren and 13 great grandchildren. Lang has 3 kids, 3 grandchildren, and 1 great grandchild. We’ lived a full life and God has been good to us. The Uhls were super people.Read more
