Traverse City, Michigan - Thomas "Tom" Fenner BeVier passed away on April 26, 2026 in Traverse City, Michigan at age

90. He was the son of Lawrence Fenner BeVier and Martha Rutledge BeVier and was born on

April 22, 1936 in Wellington, Ohio. Tom's career as a writer spanned work as a journalist for The Commercial Appeal in Memphis, Tennessee during the Civil Rights Movement where he reported on Martin Luther King, Jr. just days before his assassination, to feature writer for The Detroit Free Press and northern Michigan correspondent for The Detroit News. What began as a six month assignment in northern Michigan resulted in Tom writing a book about the area, Images of Benzie County, in 1998. He retired in Traverse City and enjoyed downtown where he bought good books at Horizon Books, good wine at Burritt's, and good cigars at Nolan's as well as hung out with friends. Most of all, Tom loved gathering friends and family to celebrate his favorite holiday, Thanksgiving. He and his wife, Meredith, hosted Thanksgiving dinner at their home on Center Road for over 40 years. The number of guests ranged from half a dozen to over two dozen over the years. Two of his adult grandsons born and raised in Traverse City smile at the fact that until 2026, they spent every Thanksgiving since their conception at "Papa Tom's and Grandma Meredith's." Tom also enjoyed sailing, wood working, fly fishing and the companionship of his beloved Britanny spaniels and Cairn Terrier, Lyman.

Tom was preceded in death by father Lawrence Fenner BeVier, mother Martha Rutledge BeVier, sister Mary Katherine Hulme, brother John Laurence BeVier, and grandson James Christopher

Powell. He is survived by Meredith (Shore) BeVier, his wife of 40 years. He is also survived by his five children; Marthe Anne Powell (James), Lisa B. Grimaudo (Frank), Timothy J. BeVier (Nancy), Hal L. BeVier (Kelly), Sidonie R. BeVier (Edith); seven grandchildren and six great grandchildren. A celebration of life will be held with family and close friends in September.
