Thomas Matthew Keith Obituary
Traverse City, MI - Thomas Matthew Keith
October 8, 1944 - April 24, 2026
On the rainy afternoon of April 24th, the greatest man I've ever known took his last breath. Thomas Matthew Keith was born on October 8, 1944, the son of John Edgar and Margaret Keith. A true son of Traverse City, Tom was born and raised in the area he called home for his entire life, though in recent years he enjoyed the warmth of winters spent down south.
Tom's life was defined by a profound devotion to others. He received his undergraduate degree from Michigan State University, before earning his Master's in Social Work from the University of Michigan. His career was a testament to his belief that a life well-lived is one spent in service. When asked about his life, Tom once said, "I have no regrets. I feel very fortunate to have had jobs I enjoyed and jobs where I believe I made a contribution to make our communities better." Throughout his work years and his retirement, he remained steadfastly committed to improving the lives of people.
That commitment took many forms throughout Northern Michigan. He spent nine years with the Department of Mental Health at the State Hospital before transitioning into private practice. He also served the Intermediate School District and spent a decade as the Clinical Director for the Critical Incident Debriefing Service. Even in retirement, Tom's mission continued; he devoted much of his time to Habitat for Humanity and spent countless hours working alongside his son and daughter-in-law to help them complete the build of their own dream home.
Beyond his professional life, Tom was a man of many talents and restless hands. Whether he was piloting a Hobie Cat, riding a motorcycle or fixing a carburetor, he moved through the world with skill and curiosity. He was a builder in every sense of the word, having constructed three houses and spending many hours in his workshop as an avid woodworker.
Tom is survived by his wife, Toni Wray; his older sister, Anne; his son, Troy Keith and daughter-in-law, Kirsten; his step-son, Travis Cosens; step daughter, Riki Engwall-Swander, step son Jim Engwall and his nephew, Edward Beyne. His legacy lives on through his grandsons, Dylan Keith and Toran Keith (along with Toran's wife, Ashley Flanagin Keith). He was preceded in death by his parents, John Edgar and Margaret and his former wife of many years, Theodora.
At Tom's request, no memorial service will be held. For those wishing to honor his memory, donations may be made to Habitat for Humanity, an organization that reflected his lifelong passion for building both homes and hope.
Tom was a man of immense impact and quiet kindness; the world is a smaller place without him, he will be missed.
