Walter C. Costigan Obituary

In loving memory of Walter Clio Costigan, a man loved by many; a truly loving, supportive husband, father, brother and grandfather. He never met a stranger he wouldn't soon call friend. He was a man who was generous with his time, friendship, and affection.

Walt was born to Ruth Williams and Clio "Tim" Costigan on May 30, 1942, in Frankfort. Soon after his mother's death in 1955, he was welcomed into the home of Gene and Irene Orr, who helped him become the man he was to become. He went to Baker Business College in Muskegon for two years, and in July 1962, he entered the U.S. Army and was stationed at Fort Briggs, North Carolina. After serving three years, he was honorably discharged. He was then hired on to General Motors in Flint.

Walt met the love of his life, Sandra Stanton, in late 1964, and they were married on July 9, 1966. Soon after, they welcomed a daughter and son in 1967, and another daughter in 1968. Life was busy and always changing.

In his spare time, Walt enjoyed hunting and fishing with his son and other family members. He passed along his love for reading to his children and grandchildren. He spent many enjoyable hours working word finds, watching Westerns, M*A*S*H, cartoons, and binge-watching the Hallmark Channel.

Soon the kids were all grown. After 30 years at General Motors he retired, built his dream home in Thompsonville, and then came the real fun...grandchildren! He was the proudest grandfather. Each of his seven grandchildren held a special place in his heart. There was nothing he loved more than spending time with them! When the grandkids were busy, he enjoyed traveling through the Upper Peninsula of Michigan with Sandy in their little red Mustang.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Tim Costigan, Ruth Moore, Gene and Irene Orr; sisters, Beatrice Costigan, Lois Jean Elston, Patricia Smith and Sharon Custer; and brothers, Clio Costigan, Luman Costigan and Michael Moore.

He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Sandra Costigan; his loving Dashshund, Tootsie; brother, Shorty O'Blenis and wife, Helen, of Thompsonville; sisters, Jodie Collins, of Columbus, Ohio, Kathleen Broder, of Traverse City, and Beverly and William Johnson, of Traverse City; son, Timothy Costigan and wife, Tammy, of East Tawas; daughter, Melissa Wiege and husband, Dan, of Loveland, Colorado; daughter, Mary Ellen Pratt and husband, Paul, of Lennon; grandchildren, Ruth and Nicholas Townsend, of Loveland, Colorado, Benjamin and Ana McConnell, of Loveland, Colorado, Jessica & Steve Sewell of Fort Collins, Colorado, Katherine McConnell of Loveland, Colorado, Kyle Costigan, of East Tawas, Kayla Costigan, of East Tawas, and Tim Reed of Thompsonville; great-grandchildren, Gavin McConnell and Daphne Townsend, of Loveland, Colorado; and many beloved nieces and nephews.
