Alden, MI - William "Mac" "Bill" McCully, 87, passed away on Christmas Day, December 25, 2025.
He was born in Ann Arbor, Michigan, but if you really wanted to find him, you looked for the farm in Alden. That was home. That was where he was happiest. If heaven has a gravel driveway, a green John Deere, and a cup of coffee waiting, he is already settled in and probably telling someone they are doing it wrong.
Bill was a dad, grandpa, great grandpa, husband, farmer, hunter, friend, and a full-time character. Some people knew him as Mac. Some knew him as Bill. Some knew him as Wild Bill, and that fit just fine. He always had a funny story to tell or some advice to give that somehow made you laugh, even when he was serious. One of his core values was simple: make it fun.
He believed in doing your best because that is what he tried to do every day. Always.
If you knew him from the road, you recognized the truck and the cattle trailer rolling by. If you lived nearby, you might remember him showing up unannounced in that big green John Deere, plowing your driveway like it was his job. Then he would stop in for coffee like it was part of the payment. That was just who he was. He took care of people, even if he acted like he was just "in the area."
He had a playful, mischievous sense of humor and the kind of stubbornness that could qualify as a superpower. He followed the rules when they made sense and ignored them when they did not. He could be quiet, loud, always right, and somehow still lovable. It was a rare mix, and it made him unforgettable.
Wild Bill loved to travel, loved northern Michigan, and loved his wife, Margaret. He took care of her until the end. Margaret is living with Alzheimer's, and the way he protected her, cared for her, and stayed loyal through the hardest stretch of life deserves to be highlighted. He did not just love her. He showed it every day. That was his best work.
Bill is survived by his wife, Margaret; his sons, Larry (Lynn), Brian, and Bruce (Adam); his grandchildren, Sharon (Carlos), Bradley, and Oscar (Maria); and his great-grandchildren, Anastasia, Aireanna, and Gabe.
A memorial gathering will be held on the farm at 8404 Ruttan Rd. in Alden, Michigan, at 1:00 PM on May 2, 2026. We will be doing something he loved and gathering together for a pig roast. Come hungry. Come casual. Come with stories.
If you would like to make a donation in his honor, please consider the Alzheimer's Association: https://www.alz.org
Most of all, join us in celebrating a wonderful human. If you knew Mac, you know the world is a little quieter without him. If you loved him, you know he would not want anyone to be too serious for too long. He would want you to smile, laugh, and tell a story that gets better every time you tell it.
